Mobile delivering for women

This week’s 2013 Women Deliver Conference will see thousands of advocates for girls’ and women’s health and empowerment gather in Malaysia’s capital Kuala Lumpur. Billed as the decade’s largest global event of its kind, the conference will convene experts from governments, healthcare, international development, private industry, and the global media to ensure that the health and rights of girls and women remain top priorities now, and for decades to come.

Last week Jill Sheffield, President and Founder of global advocacy organization Women Deliver, and Madhu Deshmukh, Director of Special Initiatives for MNCH, mHealth, and Gender at CARE USA-mHealth Alliance, eloquently demonstrated on Forbes.com the critical role mobile can play in enabling women’s better access to affordable and safe health care services and information. As mentioned in their article, our Striving and Surviving report showed that 84% of resource-poor women said they wanted better health care-related information and 39% expressed a specific interest in receiving general healthcare information through their mobile phones.

While this 39% presents a significant, existing opportunity for mHealth players, it also highlights something of a communications gap, in that many women still haven’t encountered mHealth services; or if they have, they haven’t been able to access them or seen the value in doing so. The Women Deliver conference provides an ideal platform for multi-disciplinary discussions on how to fill that gap and ensure that a range of relevant, affordable mHealth services are both developed for and communicated to women at the very base of the pyramid. Women must know about and see the value in using mHealth solutions if those solutions are to live up to their potential. We’ll be following the conference eagerly to see how the role of mobile is addressed to ensure that women can deliver.
